Tone Quest is a VR application for music education and performance. By merging the worlds of color theory and music theory Tone Quest teaches you to recognize pitches and how they are related to one another. There are currently three sections under development: vocal training, interval training, and a performance space.
The performance space features SynthBox, a volumetric generative audio synthesizer playable with hand tracked controllers. The slices of the box represent notes and are color coded to same music/color theory principles that will be found throughout Tone Quest.
The idea of relating musical notes to color is not new. Issac Newton proposed linking the color wheel to the musical notes but he did so chromatically. In his system C and C# would be seated right next to each other on the color wheel but in music theory these two pitches (a minor second interval) are distantly related. In Tone Quest, closely related pitches are represented by closely related colors. Basically, we divide the color wheel into twelve equal parts and assign them sequentially around the circle of fifths. Example: I, IV, and V are similar colors while I, iii, and vii are very different.
